Robert Donald Clark (1910- ) was a professor of speech, author, public speaker, and university president. The collection comprises correspondence, schoolwork, speeches, writings, research notes, publications, administrative reports and memoranda, and reference files. They include personal correspondence, Clark's Matthew Simpson manuscripts and doctoral dissertation, and reports and correspondence relating to the faculty strike, Olympic boycott, and issues of student unrest during Clark's five years as president of San Jose State College. The papers from Clark's tenure as president of the University of Oregon include general administrative correspondence and memoranda, many speeches on various subjects, and materials relating to Honors programs and the Robert D. Clark Honors College. The collection contains only scant materials relating to student unrest at the University of Oregon, and contains nothing specifically relating to Clark's year as a pastor (1936). Other papers in the collection cover Clark's professional work with debate and symposium teams, his correspondence and reports from professional organizations and conferences, and his published writings as well as drafts, research copies and related correspondence and documents. Finally, there is a large volume of clippings and publications on a wide variety of subjects, including student unrest, speech and oratory, higher education and honors programs, and political issues.

Robert Donald Clark was born in Frontier County, Neb., in 1910, and was educated at Pasadena College and the University of Southern California. Beginning in 1931, Clark taught speech at Pasadena College, the College of the Pacific, Stockton Junior College, and finally at the University of Oregon from 1943 to 1964.
